Top Foodie Things to Do in Istria in May
May marks the beginning of tourist season in Istria. The rainy season is finally gone, temperatures are warm, and everything is blooming. By end of May, yo can also go swimming. If you’re looking to visit Istria before it gets crowded, May is the perfect time to visit.
This is also the month of the Open Wine Cellar Day in Istria (May 27) when over 70 renowned winemakers all over Istria open their wine cellars’ doors to the public. It is organized by the Istria Tourist Board and Vinistra (the association of winemakers and winegrowers of Istria). This is for sure wine-lover’s favorite day of the year.
NW Istria (Umag, Novigrad, Brtonigla, and Buje)
Days of Asparagus in NW Istria (March 21 to May 13): Relish in imaginative, delicious and fragrant delicacies made from Istrian wild asparagus, ranging from the renowned “fritaja” (omelettes), soups, homemade pastas and risottos to ingenious combinations with meat and fish and scrumptious desserts. Restaurants throughout NW Istria are participating in this event.
Istria Wine & Walk in Buje (May 18): You are in for a treat: 11 km of an inspiring walk, meeting 9 first-class Istrian winemakers, 7 local producers and caterers and delighting in 7 tasting stops.
