Top Foodie Things to Do in Istria in May

May marks the beginning of tourist season in Istria. The rainy season is finally gone, temperatures are warm, and everything is blooming. By end of May, yo can also go swimming. If you’re looking to visit Istria before it gets crowded, May is the perfect time to visit.

This is also the month of the Open Wine Cellar Day in Istria (May 26) when over 70 renowned winemakers all over Istria open their wine cellars’ doors to the public. It is organized by the Istria Tourist Board and Vinistra (the association of winemakers and winegrowers of Istria). This is for sure wine-lover’s favorite day of the year.

NW Istria (Umag, Novigrad, Brtonigla, and Buje)

Days of Asparagus in NW Istria (March to May): Relish in imaginative, delicious and fragrant delicacies made from Istrian wild asparagus, ranging from the renowned “fritaja” (omelettes), soups, homemade pastas and risottos to ingenious combinations with meat and fish and scrumptious desserts. Restaurants throughout NW Istria are participating in this event.

Oleum Olivarium (May 4 to 5): Olive oil exhibition in Krasica, one of the oldest in Croatia.

Istria Wine & Walk in Buje (May 18): You are in for a treat: 11 km of an inspiring walk, meeting 9 first-class Istrian winemakers, 7 local producers and caterers and delighting in 7 tasting stops.

Gnam-Gnam Fest: The Sea on a Plate in Novigrad (May): Savory and varied fish and seafood dishes offered at promotional prices. Grilled calamari, fried sardines, seafood salads, fish stew, mussel stew and many other seafood specialties will find their place on the menu.

Park Food Fest in Novigrad (May 4): Open-air gourmet and wine event at town parks right by the sea. Park Food Fest brings together street food and show cooking from renowned local restaurants.

Brtonigla Wine Day in Brtonigla (May 27): Open wine cellars day & winery tour by train.

Central Istria (Pazin, Buzet, Groznjan, and Motovun)

Kaldir Fruits in Motovun (May 26): Fresh fruits market.


Wine Nights in Porec (May 4 to 11): Entertainment and culinary event presents the best bars, restaurants and nightclubs in Porec, and provides you with the opportunity to sample local cuisine and renowned Istrian wines.

Vinistra in Porec (May 10 to 12): Leading exhibition of wine and other gastronomic Istrian products such as grappa, olive oil, honey, cheese and prosciutto.

Vrsar and Funtana

Fisherman’s Festival in Funtana (May 31): Traditional folk festival accompanied by a rich culture & entertainment program and a gastro offer.


ItaliaFest in Rovinj (May): A fair of original Italian gastronomic products.


Wine Exhibition in Barban (May 18): A committee made up of wine connoisseurs and experts oenologists takes place for wine evaluation the day before the event, and the festival itself is an event that is attended by a large number of visitors and the best wines are proclaimed.

Run.Eat.Drink: Run 4 Teran in Sisan (May 25): This race series offers something different – wine and Istrian product tasting combined with running through the unforgettable picturesque landscapes of Istria.

Labin and Rabac

Kvarner Shrimp Festival in Rabac (May 25): Find out why Kvarner shrimps (scampi) are one of the most prized Mediterranean cuisine delicacies.
